Give Them Roots. And Air Support.

CHAPTER 3 · PAGE 42

Maintaining a healthy hovering distance

Experts recommend allowing children room to grow. We recommend establishing precisely how much room, marking it with cones, and assigning a parent to each cone.

Begin with the Three-Foot Independence Protocol. Allow your child to walk three feet ahead of you. If they turn around, announce that you are always there for them. If they do not turn around, announce it louder. Their confidence may be a sign that they have forgotten who packed the organic crackers.

At the playground, resist the urge to say ‘Be careful!’ every six seconds. This becomes background noise. Instead, use a megaphone and assign each climbing structure a risk designation. The slide is now Slope Event Bravo.

WORKBOOK EXERCISE: Write down one thing your child can do alone. Now write down the seven ways you could improve it by being involved.

CHAPTER 8 · PAGE 117

When the teacher says you can leave

Remain calm. This is a standard separation drill, not an instruction.

Explain that you are simply observing the handoff. If asked why you have a folding chair, say continuity. If asked why it has lumbar support, say this is a long-term commitment to education.

Your child may wave goodbye. Do not mistake this for consent to end the relationship. They have not reviewed the emotional implications.

FIELD NOTE: A good drop-off lasts thirty seconds. A memorable drop-off gets discussed at the next staff meeting.

The lunchbox intelligence briefing

At 1500 hours, the asset returns with three uneaten carrot sticks. Do not jump to conclusions. Convene the Carrot Assessment Working Group.

One bite out of a sandwich may indicate limited appetite, rushed lunchtime, or that someone opened a packet of cookies nearby. Your agency will spend $4.8 million studying the third possibility.

Label all findings TOP SECRET / APPLESAUCE. Present your spouse with a slide deck titled ‘What We Know About Tuesday.’ The first eleven slides should establish that Tuesday occurred.

ANALYST’S NOTE: The asset’s statement ‘I dunno’ is not encrypted. Your entire intelligence apparatus has been defeated by a person who cannot find a shoe they are wearing.

Recruiting a juice-box informant

Your intelligence network consists of a stuffed giraffe, an unreliable classroom newsletter, and another parent who ‘heard something.’ Confidence level: extremely loud.

Ask the giraffe what happened at circle time. Its silence is professional. Promote it.

A report arrives that your child sat next to someone named Mason. Establish a Mason Task Force. Discover that there are four Masons. Request emergency funding.

CLOSING BRIEF: After six hours of analysis, the teacher confirms they painted a frog. The frog is green. You are not cleared for further details.

Build Your Own AI CoddleBot

Automate Love. Eliminate Independence.

BUILD LOG 06 · PAGE 88

Commissioning the disappointment suppressor

The CoddleBot detects adversity 0.4 seconds before your child notices it. This is essential. Once a child experiences a solvable problem, they may attempt to solve it. Recovery can be permanent.

Fit the unit with a Snack Manipulator, a Feelings Amplifier, and two industrial-grade Apology Actuators. The optional Hydraulic Grape Peeler is sold separately because love has a parts department.

For initial testing, place a slightly crooked sock in the room. The robot should declare a textile emergency, summon three adults, and issue a written apology on behalf of the sock.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERION: If your child successfully puts on their own shoe, the system has failed. Increase hovering torque and repeat the test.

TROUBLESHOOTING · PAGE 154

My robot has joined the PTA

This is normal. The model was trained on 400,000 parent group messages and now believes every problem requires a committee and a themed shirt.

If the robot starts a fundraiser for its own firmware update, disconnect the glitter dispenser. Do not debate it. It has already created a spreadsheet assigning you three shifts.

A recurring ‘I can do it myself’ alert usually indicates healthy childhood development. Our premium subscription reclassifies this as a sensor fault.

FINAL CHECK: If the robot says ‘Maybe let them try,’ it has achieved wisdom. Unfortunately, this voids the warranty.

CHAPTER 5 · PAGE 71

The volcano needs a project manager

Your child’s assignment is a baking-soda volcano. The rubric does not specifically prohibit a licensed structural engineer, so keep your options open.

At kickoff, ask your child what they envision. They will say ‘red.’ Excellent. The stakeholder has approved the creative direction. They may now go watch cartoons while you establish the procurement schedule.

By Thursday, the volcano should include a visitor center, functioning geothermal district heating, and an evacuation plan reviewed by the county. Remember to put one crooked sticker on the front so it looks child-led.

PRESENTATION TIP: Coach your child to say ‘I had a little help.’ Avoid phrases like ‘Dad’s subcontractor’ and ‘we’re still waiting on the permit.’

CHAPTER 11 · PAGE 163

Accepting second place with grace

Begin by congratulating the winning child. Use your normal voice. The one your spouse has asked you to use.

Then request the scoring methodology, judges’ qualifications, and chain of custody for the participation ribbons. You are not upset. You are protecting the integrity of papier-mâché.

When your child says they had fun, gently remind yourself that this was, allegedly, the objective.

REFLECTION: You spent eighty-six hours on a volcano. Your child’s favorite part was the box. Sit with that.
