COMPANY HISTORY 04

Two founders. One tape measure. No concession speech.

The origin of a shirt company that mistook a fitting room for a situation room.

Founding Father Flannel garment
Exhibit A. The garment has declined to testify.

The incident that started everything.

Our founding partners, Buck Standard and Grant Exception, met during a prolonged disagreement with a department-store mirror. Buck said the shirt had moved left. Grant said the fitting-room lighting had an agenda. The sales associate suggested a larger size. A company was born before either man could be exposed to further evidence.

The first constitutional convention.

Their kitchen-table summit established three nonnegotiable principles: strong collars, domestic-sounding product names, and a returns policy written by someone who had never returned a phone call. Grant proposed measuring customers. Buck asked whether this would create a registry. They compromised by measuring the table and announcing record growth.

The supply-chain exception.

An Italian swatch arrived by mistake and immediately outperformed every fabric in the meeting. Grant said it was an emergency. Buck said it was a narrowly tailored exception, which was the first time either founder had used “tailored” correctly. The company now treats foreign fabric as a temporary strategic guest with no voting rights.

The leadership structure.

Buck serves as Chief Executive Patriot, responsible for vision, volume and pointing at things on tours. Grant is Director of Fine Print, a position that now occupies three floors. Their founding disagreement remains unresolved: whether the customer is always right, or merely right enough to blame for the measurements.

The mission today.

Make America Fit Again. Not because a shirt can fix the country, but because an open top button should be a style decision rather than a distress signal. The board has approved this statement subject to the removal of all reasonable parts. The reasonable parts have appealed.
