RETURN DEBRIEF / TOKYO
Six nights abroad. Lifetime expert status.
A traveler returns with a tiny souvenir, a large suitcase and a complete theory of a country he mostly observed through glass.
Freedom Tours guests leave with luggage. They return with analysis. Six nights in Tokyo qualifies a passenger to brief coworkers on transport, education, economics and whether everybody over there is ‘just more respectful.’
Our debriefing team attempts to separate observations from conclusions. It is the only part of the trip customers consider intrusive.
Establish the evidence
Guest: ‘Their whole system just works.’ Evidence: the shuttle arrived on time. The shuttle was operated by our employee, Dennis, who had been circling the block for twenty minutes because the group was still choosing breakfast.
Guest: ‘You don't see much traffic.’ Evidence: three transfers scheduled outside the busy periods. When asked about the rest of the city, he explained that he could tell.
Guest: ‘They take food seriously.’ Evidence: a bucket of chicken consumed beneath a carefully selected familiar logo. He had, however, tried a sauce he could not immediately identify. We have opened a separate incident report.
Prepare the presentation
The returning traveler assembles forty-seven photographs. Thirty-two feature the same hotel view. Eight feature lunch. Four are screenshots of the weather at home, provided for comparison.
The remaining three show things he cannot name. He captions them ‘culture.’ This is efficient and prevents anyone from asking whether he went inside.
His coworkers listen politely until the sentence ‘What we need to learn from them is...’ The meeting has now exceeded the duration of his only conversation with someone who lived there.
Maintain the credential
Future news stories about Japan should be introduced with ‘When I was there.’ This establishes a durable consulting practice based on one hotel stay and Dennis's punctuality.
Our guest declines the chance to return. He says he has done Japan and would prefer somewhere completely different next year.
We have booked the same restaurants in another country. He is delighted by our attention to detail.
